Explore one of Cornwall's most spectacular waterways on an Enterprise Boats trip

As the warmer weather approaches, there's no better time to plan an unforgettable journey along one of Cornwall's most spectacular waterways. The Enterprise Boats trip from Falmouth to Malpas offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, fascinating history, and serene relaxation - all from the unique perspective of the water.

A boat journey through living history

Your adventure begins in Falmouth Harbour, the third largest natural harbour in the world. As the boat glides away from the pier, you'll be treated to impressive views of the bustling Falmouth Docks and Pendennis Shipyard, where world-class sailing and motor yachts come to life.

Entering the expansive Carrick Roads, the silhouette of St. Mawes Castle appears on the headland - one of Henry VIII's best-preserved coastal fortresses and perhaps the most ornately decorated of them all. This Tudor masterpiece stands as a testament to Cornwall's strategic maritime importance through the centuries.

Hidden creeks and maritime heritage

As you sail further, the boat navigates past numerous sheltered creeks and inlets that each tell their own story. Mylor Creek once housed HMS Ganges, a Royal Navy training ship for boys, while Pill Creek was a thriving center for shipbuilding and the traditional Fal Oyster fishing industry.

In the distance, the elegant Trelissick House comes into view - a magnificent riverside property now owned by the National Trust. Set on its own peninsula and surrounded by exotic gardens, this 18th-century gem offers spectacular views over the Fal River. The boat makes a scheduled stop here, allowing passengers to explore the house, wander the woodland walk, or enjoy refreshments at the Crofters Cafe and it’s a must-see destination when in Cornwall.

Marine wildlife encounters and natural wonders

The Carrick Roads is a haven for wildlife. As you approach the iconic King Harry Ferry, keep your eyes peeled for playful seals around the mussel farm, the electric-blue flash of kingfishers along the riverbanks, and elegant herons standing statue-like in the shallows, including the resident heron affectionately named "Harry" by locals.

The impressive chain ferry itself is a sight to behold, connecting St. Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula to Feock, Truro, and Falmouth. Named after King Henry VI and part of the historic Pilgrim's Way to St. Michael's Mount, this crossing saves travellers a 27-mile detour while offering unparalleled river views.

View tea plantations and D-Day history from the water

Following the river's gentle curves, you'll pass the vast Tregothnan Estate, a living and working private property where the same family has nurtured rare plants since 1334. Remarkably, this estate pioneered English tea production, taking advantage of its unique microclimate to cultivate 26 miles of tea bushes alongside Cornish Manuka and wildflower honey production.

The journey takes on a more solemn note as you approach Turnaware Point, a beach that served as an embarkation point for the D-Day landings. A memorial here honors those from the 29th Infantry Division, V Corps US Army who never returned. Nearby stands Tolverne Cottage (also known as Smugglers Cottage), a 17th-century building where General Eisenhower stayed during D-Day preparations.

Your voyage culminates in the picturesque village of Malpas, an idyllic setting perfect for a leisurely lunch at the Heron Inn. You can choose to pause your journey here and visit Truro, or remain aboard to experience the return trip, offering new perspectives on the river's many treasures.
