February Half-Term Adventures Around the Fal River: Your Ultimate Family Guide
7 February
Looking for ways to keep the whole family entertained this February half-term? The Fal River area offers an incredible variety of activities and attractions that combine fun, education, and outdoor adventure – whatever the weather brings!
Maritime History Comes Alive
Start your half term adventure at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, where maritime heritage springs to life. Children can explore interactive exhibits, discover Cornwall's seafaring past, and engage with hands-on activities that bring history into the present, including a week of science-based activities called Science of the Sea.
A Tale of Two Castles
Take the scenic St Mawes Ferry across the harbour for a day of castle exploration. Pendennis Castle stands guard on one side of the estuary, while St Mawes Castle mirrors it on the other – both offering fascinating insights into Tudor history. Kids can imagine themselves as medieval defenders exploring these historic fortresses, with stunning views across the Fal estuary as their reward.

Gardens Galore
February brings the first hints of spring to Cornwall's magnificent gardens:
At Trelissick, follow winding paths through early-blooming camellias and magnificent trees, with views across the Fal River that will take your breath away. Collect a seasonal sketchbook from the welcome team at reception and follow the half-term sketchbook trail. There are 8 prompts in the booklet to help you explore, draw and be creative during your visit to Trelissick.
Glendurgan Garden offers its famous maze – perfect for burning off extra energy – while early magnolias begin their spectacular show. If you are feeling adventurous, head to the centre of the garden to get lost in the cherry laurel maze - see who can make it to the thatched summerhouse in the middle first. At the bottom of the valley, you can access Durgan Beach, skim a stone, build a sandcastle or enjoy a picnic.
Trebah Garden transforms into a subtropical paradise, with its valley garden leading down to a private beach. Look out for the first signs of their famous spring blooms. Trebah offers Children's Trails, which are both educational and fun and appeal to children of all ages. A trail is the ideal way to ensure you have a fantastic adventure during your visit and the chance to see different parts of the garden.
The intimate Gyllyngdune Gardens in Falmouth provide a perfect peaceful retreat, with their restored bandstand and shell-studded grotto offering unique photo opportunities. A few minute's stroll down through the rose garden, past the secret grotto, natural play area and monolithic arch, brings you to the seafront with incredible views of Pendennis Castle and Gyllyngvase Beach.
Heritage and Nature Combined
Opening for half-term, the St Just Interpretive Centre offers families a fascinating journey through time and nature. Located at St Just in Roseland Church known for its stunning tropical gardens – described by poet laureate John Betjeman as "for some the most beautiful churchyard on earth" – this free attraction provides interactive exhibits perfect for curious minds of all ages. Children can discover Celtic Christian heritage dating back to 550AD, learn some Cornish language, and explore the rich biodiversity of local plants and wildlife. Get there via the St Mawes Ferry, or hop on the King Harry Ferry if driving.
After exploring the Centre, stop by the newly expanded Renwicks Café, where Phoebe and her team serve delicious freshly cooked meals and homemade cakes – the perfect pit stop for your adventure. From here, you can embark on beautiful walks to St Mawes Castle or along the creek-side path to Messack Woods, making it an ideal location for a full day of family exploration.
Wildlife and Water Adventures
No half-term would be complete without meeting the residents at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek. Watch rescued seals swimming underwater and learn about their rehabilitation – it's a magical experience that's both educational and heartwarming.
Take the family on an unforgettable journey aboard the St Mawes Ferry! Look out for dolphins, breathe in the crisp sea air, and discover the charming village of St Mawes. With hourly sailings running 7 days a week it's a perfect way to make those half-term memories. Get 10% off when you book online.
For a different perspective on the area, hop aboard the King Harry Ferry to the Roseland Peninsula. Make it an adventure by exploring the quiet beaches and coves, warming up afterwards with a delicious hot chocolate from The Thirstea Co at Towan Beach – the perfect way to ward off any February chills!
