Autumn Splendour at Trelissick

6 November

If you like getting together with loved ones in the great outdoors or need some peace and quiet amongst nature, make sure Trelissick is on your list of things to do this autumn

Trelissick is located at the head of the Carrick Roads on the River Fal and offers a stunning showcase of natural beauty throughout the year. The estate becomes particularly magical in autumn as the trees display vibrant red, orange, copper, and gold shades. Once a private family home, the expansive estate features parkland, woodland, an Iron Age promontory fort, and an 18th-century quay. The garden is a place for plant enthusiasts and anyone seeking a gentle walk. The meandering paths take you from sweeping Cornish vistas to intimate spaces bursting with colour, spectacular maritime views and plenty of space for families to enjoy and play.

One of the most enchanting aspects of Trelissick's autumn views is its location, offering stunning vistas across the Fal Estuary. Whether you're leisurely strolling along the woodland trails or pausing on a bench overlooking the river, the combination of autumn colours and water views creates a breathtaking sight.

Trelissick House, originally built in 1755, is at the heart of the gardens. Its grand architecture provides a perfect backdrop for the beauty of its surroundings. The views from the house towards Falmouth and out to sea are ever-changing depending on the tide and weather conditions.

Exploring the garden, you'll discover a landscape of contrast with plants from the far-flung reaches of the world and local fruit trees in the orchard across the bridge at Carcaddon, bursting with around 70 varieties of Cornish apples. Along winding paths, bulbs and corms like crocus and cyclamen flower during the autumn months in the main garden, and early rhododendrons and camellias will start to flower before the winter months. The focal point of the main lawn is the magnificent Japanese red cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), planted in 1898, an extremely long-lived species of tree that can grow for thousands of years.

The iconic Hydrangea Walk, usually a sea of blue in summer, fades to muted purples and dusty pinks in autumn. One particularly captivating spot is the fern-fringed Dell, where the dense canopy of trees begins to thin, allowing dappled sunlight to illuminate the vibrant undergrowth.

The walking trails in the garden wind through the estate, providing secluded spots ideal for quiet moments of reflection or a picnic during your walk. The Woodland Walk is incredible in autumn, with tall trees forming a vibrant canopy of colour. This path leads down to the King Harry Ferry, where you can enjoy stunning views of the river and the changing seasons from a different perspective.

Along with stunning views, Trelissick offers an atmosphere of calm that invites reflection and connection with nature. Whether you're a gardener, a nature lover, or need a peaceful escape, Trelissick in Autumn offers a grounding and inspiring experience in a tranquil setting.

With so much to see and do, you can spend a whole day out enjoying Trelissick. Refreshments are available at Crofters Cafe where you can enjoy  a hot lunch, afternoon cream tea, or a comforting hot chocolate.
