Exploring The Rosevine Hotel: An Insightful Conversation with Julio de Carvalho, General Manager

Nestled on the picturesque Roseland Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the South Coast, The Rosevine is a charming seaside bolthole that offers a warm and welcoming retreat all year round.  Close to the historic towns of Portscatho, St Mawes and Truro, this hotel is a haven for those seeking relaxation and an authentic Cornish experience.

Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Julio de Carvalho, the Multi-Site General Manager of The Rosevine, and the sister hotel Old Quay House in Fowey to learn more about this enchanting destination.

Can you tell us about the history and unique features of The Rosevine Hotel?

The Rosevine has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century when it was originally built as a private residence. Over the years, it has evolved into the lovely hotel it is today, retaining much of its original charm while offering modern comforts.  One of the unique features of The Rosevine is our stunning location overlooking Gerrans Bay. Guests can enjoy breathtaking sea views and easy access to the sandy beaches.  Our hotel is designed to feel like a home away from home, with spacious suites and apartments, many with their own kitchens, making it perfect for families and extended stays.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry and, more specifically, as a hotel general manager?

My passion for hospitality began at a young age. I was always fascinated by the idea of creating memorable experiences for people. I pursued a degree in Hotel Management and worked my way up through various roles in the industry.  The role of a general manager appealed to me because it combines leadership, creativity, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on both guests and staff. At The Rosevine, I have the privilege of working in a beautiful setting and leading a dedicated team to deliver exceptional service.

I believe in a hands-on leadership style and am commitment to excellence. I believe that the key to a successful hotel is not just in its physical attributes but in the quality of service and the personal touch provided to each guest. You will often find me interacting with my guests, ensuring that their stay is perfect in every way.  The ability to inspire and motivate my team is a crucial factor in our success. My moto is to ensure that we create wonderful memories for our guests, so that they will become part of the Rosevine family.

What is your favourite part of your role?

There are many aspects of my job that I love, but if I had to choose, it would be interacting with our guests. Hearing their stories and seeing the joy on their faces when they experience the beauty and tranquillity of The Rosevine is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy the variety that comes with the role, no two days are ever the same, and there's always a new challenge or opportunity to improve.

What sets The Rosevine Hotel apart from other hotels in Cornwall?

Cornwall is known for its stunning landscapes. How does The Rosevine Hotel incorporate the local environment into the guest experience?

The natural beauty of Cornwall is a central part of the experience at The Rosevine. Our location on the Roseland Peninsula allows guests to immerse themselves in the stunning coastal scenery. Our guest immerses themselves in exploring activities such as guided nature walks, kayaking, and sailing, all accessible from nearby villages, such as Portscatho to showcase the best of the local environment. Our restaurant features locally sourced ingredients, allowing guests to savour the flavours of Cornwall while enjoying the view of the bay.

In your opinion, what are the must-visit attractions or hidden gems in Cornwall that guests should explore while staying at the hotel?

There are so many wonderful places to explore in Cornwall. A visit to St Mawes Castle is a must for history enthusiasts, and the charming village of Portscatho offers a glimpse into traditional Cornish life.
