Discover St Mawes & the Roseland under paddle power with St Mawes Kayaks

Exploring St Mawes and the Roseland by water is a magical experience. With St Mawes Kayaks, you can do so using paddle power. We meet Jay, the owner of St Mawes Kayaks, to learn more about his business and passions.

You're new to St Mawes Kayaks. Please tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I've always enjoyed the outdoors and continue to have a whirlwind romance with Cornwall. The Fal River hosts many beautiful towns, villages, and hamlets, all supporting an abundance of history, stories, and characters I'm drawn to. I'm retired now, so the kayak hire business will keep me out of mischief!

What inspired you to start your business in St Mawes?

I wish I could take credit for starting this business, but it was Mark Bower who set it up 17 years ago. He felt it was time to move on, so I was fortunate he decided to sell the business to me.

What are the benefits of a sit-on kayak?

Anyone can use a sit-on kayak. They are so forgiving and fun to use. With no experience, you can just sit on it and go!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Always the people I meet. You have to enjoy working with people, and I love to see families and friends paddle off from the slipway to have their mini-adventures.

Do you need any previous experience to hire a St Mawes Kayak?

Not at all! I will provide all the safety and coaching you need for a safe and happy kayak adventure.

Can you provide some insight into the wildlife or marine life that kayakers might see during their trips?

I won't say you will see leaping Dolphins every time, but there's a rich abundance of both land and sea birds along the shore. Seals will occasionally pop up, and fish such as Mullet and Mackerel will breach the surface.

What are some of your favourite kayaking routes in the area?

The Percuil is a stunning river to paddle. It's our most popular route, and paddlers can explore at their own pace.

Do you have any top tips for being on the water?

Check the weather; it's all about wind strength. Too windy and it's a no-go for kayaking.

Can you share a memorable experience you or a customer has had on the water?

It's the parent's smiles! As they return to the slipway, you can see they've just had a wonderful experience with their children, which is not easy in our busy lives.

When you're not on the water, what is your favourite thing to do in St Mawes?

The castle, gosh, I love it! The history, views and fond memories of my father.  I will also take this opportunity to say how friendly and supportive the locals are!  Everyone has been so kind, offering help and advice. Thank you to everyone in St Mawes for making me feel so welcome!

What are your future plans for St Mawes Kayaks?

Maintain the high standards set by Mark!   We will also be offering school day activities involving archery at St Mawes Castle and kayaking.
