As a key embarkation point during the Second World War and an essential hub for naval operations, Falmouth played a significant role in the Allied war effort. This contribution was recognised during last year’s D-Day 80 commemorations, and VE Day 80 offers another meaningful opportunity for the town to come together — to honour those who served, remember those who were lost, and celebrate the peace that followed.

The day begins with a ceremonial flag-raising at 9am on The Moor, followed by a commemorative service at 11am in Kimberley Park’s Memorial Garden. Wreaths will be laid on behalf of the Town Mayor, the military, A&P Falmouth representing the civilian population, and local veterans.

Pendennis Castle will then take centre stage, hosting a range of free, family-friendly activities from 11am to 4.30pm. Visitors can explore educational stalls such as Beauty is Your Duty and Dig for Victory, share personal or family stories of life during WWII, join engaging talks and guided tours of the historic grounds, or simply sit back and soak up the atmosphere ‘street party’ style while enjoying a wartime-inspired menu from the Castle café.

Entry to the castle will be free all day from 10am to 10pm, inviting the community to explore the site’s wartime heritage through interactive workshops, historical displays and hands-on learning.

As the sun sets, the celebrations will continue with live performances from local musicians and choirs at Pendennis Castle, leading up to a moving beacon lighting ceremony at 9.30pm. This poignant moment forms part of a nationwide act of remembrance, with towns and cities across the UK taking part. As the beacon is lit, the crowd will be invited to join together in singing the patriotic hymn ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’—a unifying tribute to the many millions who gave so much in the pursuit of peace and freedom.

“Falmouth’s deep-rooted maritime history and its role during WWII give this day extra resonance for our town,” commented Richard Gates, Town Manager for Falmouth. “We’re proud to offer a programme that brings people together in remembrance, education and community spirit – with special thanks to Pendennis Castle, Falmouth Town Council, Falmouth BID, A&P Falmouth, our military partners and all those involved in making this commemorative day so meaningful.”

Kirsty Hedderly, Property Manager at Pendennis Castle adds; “Join us in celebrating VE Day 80, a day of reflection, remembrance, and community. We’ll honour the courage and unity that shaped our shared history with a variety of meaningful events, all with free entry. From a commemorative service to family-friendly activities at Pendennis Castle, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn. As the day draws to a close, come together to witness the symbolic lighting of the Beacon, marking this special occasion. It’s a day for all to gather, reflect, and celebrate our collective spirit and history.”
