Fal River Faves: Skinners

20 February 2017

We love Skinners. Not only do they produce incredible ales, they are also a local company!

Skinners Brewery started right on the bank of the river and have been going strong for 20 years (in fact, 2017 is their 20 th year in business!) Hoorah, we’ll raise a Betty Stoggs to that!

Known for their award winning beers, the brand was started by Steve Skinner back in 1997 as a family owned and run company. Their first ever golden ale, Cornish Knocker, named after the tin mining faeries of local myth, is still one of the most popular in these parts, only rivalled we believe by their piece de resistance… Betty Stoggs.

Betty Stoggs has become the mascot at our annual festival and we have to say, it’s perhaps the best ale we’ve ever tasted. And don’t just take our word for it either, it was named Britain’s Best Bitter by CAMRA too!

But what we love even more than the ale is that despite immense growth and shiny awards, the family business still runs true to their ethos, sourcing Cornish grown Barley, remaining environmentally friendly, priding themselves on the fantastic people that run the everyday operations and their unique entrepreneurial attitudes. It’s this pioneer spirit combined with their passion that has kept Skinners at the top of their game.

We highly recommend a brewery tour, a chance to see behind the scenes and taste the award winning ales, experience the brewing process and even enjoy a tutored beer tasting in the Tap Room. At only £8.50 per person it gives guests the chance to see a Cornish success story and enjoy a variety of tasty ales, each offering something different. Sample the fun named Lushingtons, the Cornish milk stout, Penny Come Quick, Porthleven and the original Cornish Knocker. Don’t forget to stop by the shop also in order to take some delicious ales home with you!

Skinner’s certainly give a new meaning to the term ‘home brew’ – what started as a small operation has become a booming beer business, still with home firmly at the heart of it. Make sure you book tour tickets in advance… and give Betty our love!
